Mulanje Mission Hospital, Malawi

Mulanje Mission Hospital is a health facility at the base of beautiful Mulanje Mountain in southern Malawi, committed to provide quality preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health care to the community in the catchment area and all others who seek our services, irrespective of gender, age, religion or social status. Our Labor Ward provides a safer birthing experience for about 200-250 rural mothers per month, through the efforts of its dedicated midwife team.

Mulanje Mission Hospital was originally started in the 1890s on the slopes of Mulanje Mountain in order to avoid the attention of slave traders. The initial clinic was a maternity facility; then in the 1950s it also began to train local midwives. The Mulanje Mission College of Nursing & Midwifery remains active to this day and trains large numbers of students in both fields, as all Malawian nurses also trained in midwifery.

Malawi is amongst the top five most impoverished nations in the world and remains one of the riskiest places for women to give birth, with persistently high rates of both maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Our vision for a larger collaboration with Breech Without Borders is to provide clinical staff and midwifery students with the most up-to-date evidence and training regarding vaginal breech birth and how to practice it safely in a high-risk, low-technology context.
