Seminar: From Simulations to Safe Practice
From Simulations to Safe Practice :
Achieving Breech Birth Confidence in Aotearoa/NZ
Taught by Lucía Alonso González, RM PhD
Offered in NZ and other selected locations
You have completed Breech 2.0 and attended the Breech Without Borders in-person training. Now you may be asking yourself: What is the next step? How can I translate this learning into my everyday practice within the unique context of Aotearoa / New Zealand's maternity system?
This full-day seminar provides an advanced educational opportunity designed to answer exactly those questions. With a strong emphasis on safety, it will equip you to integrate evidence-based breech care into your clinical practice while strengthening your confidence as a maternity health professional.
The seminar addresses key considerations for counselling women about options for their breech pregnancy; planning a vaginal breech birth in primary, secondary, and tertiary settings; and preparing for unexpected breech presentation during labour, when transfer or emergency caesarean may not be timely feasible.
A major focus will be on management of active breech labour, both at home and in hospital. Topics include:
- Safe monitoring of the fetal heart rate
- Appropriate use of intermittent auscultation; interpretation of breech cardiotocography (CTG) in first and second stage - including analysis of real case examples
- Cord prolapse
- Management of breech labour with epidural anaesthesia
- Current evidence and recommended practice regarding artificial rupture of membranes, induction and augmentation of labour
- Gestational diabetes, hypertension, and VBAC in breech labours
- Decision-making in cases of fetal compromise prior to rumping
- Recognition of labour dystocia
Significant time will be dedicated to the critical phase after rumping, with emphasis on recognising fetal deterioration promptly and making rapid, effective decisions to expedite birth safely.
Drawing on Breech Without Borders' unique collection of more than 350 breech birth videos, Lucia will illustrate each subject with real-life examples for group discussion and analysis, offering participants a valuable opportunity to link theory directly to practice.

About the Instructor:
Lucía Alonso González is originally from Spain, where she completed her BSc in Biology and PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics. After working as a scientist in a number of projects in the UK and New Zealand, she decided to change careers to midwifery. She studied her BSc in Midwifery degree in Christchurch, New Zealand, and has been working as a registered midwife since 2015.
Currently she lives in Nelson, a mid-sized town on the top of the South Island, where she practices in a variety of roles: from a hospital midwife in primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals to remote rural midwifery; Lucia is also a flight-trained midwife and a member of NZMAT (the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team). She loves to combine her clinical work with research whenever possible.
Her current areas of interest are fetal growth restriction--she is a champion for the Perinatal Institute's Growth Assessment Protocol in Nelson Hospital--and supporting other practitioners to bring back the skills to facilitate vaginal breech births.
