Mechanics of breech birth

Breech birth basics:

What is breech? How common is it? What are the different types of breech presentations, and how does breech birth work?

Vaginal breech birth: Why it's important and how it works

This free lecture, sponsored by the University of Utah and Project ECHO, introduces why vaginal breech training is important and shows how it works through a series of photos and videos.

After a vaginal breech birth, the presenting part (legs or bum) may be bruised or swollen. It can appear dramatic at first, but heals quickly.

Because vaginal breech birth is relatively uncommon, many health care providers are unfamiliar with this transient neonatal trauma and may overreact and overtreat something that resolves quickly on its own.

We recommend consulting with an experienced breech provider if you have any concerns about the baby's legs, bum, or genitals after the birth.

Carefully document the areas of concern as well as the healing progress day by day.
