HOPE Foundation

Breech Without Borders is collaborating with HOPE Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh. Beginning in 2017, with the arrival of nearly one million Rohingya Refugees in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, Hope began responding to the needs of those who have suffered grave persecution at the hands of the Myanmar government. Through the establishment of Hope Field Hospital for Women, which remains one of the few inpatients facilities inside of the refugee camps, Hope is treating upwards of 300 patients per day inside of the camps.

Breech Without Borders has been invited by the Hope Foundation for Women and Children of Bangladesh (hopefoundationbd.org) to bring breech and twin training to Cox's Bazar, where nearly one million displaced Rohingya people live in the most densely populated camps in the world. More than 75% of residents are women and children. With cesarean sections performed for nearly every breech and twin birth, and surgical resources stretched to the brink, this training offers a critical intervention.

Phase 1 (currently in process) involves training 8 team leaders who will be overseeing the project. One will be attending the training in Nice, France in June 2025.

Phase 2 (pending funding) will deliver 12 days of simulation-based training across three sites (2 hospitals and 1 midwifery school). Each four-day series will educate 48 maternity professionals using our immersive curriculum. Trainings include:

  • Three days of hands-on vaginal breech birth instruction (16 trainees/day)

  • One day of Breech & Twins Master Class (all 48 trainees together)

  • Sophie and Her Mum simulators provided to each clinic for ongoing practice

  • Access to the Breech Pro 2.0 online course and continued mentorship via ongoing live sessions and debriefs

  • The 2nd edition of our textbook, A Guide to Physiological Breech Birth

In exchange, the Hope Foundation has agreed to provide us with at least 3 years of data on their breech and twin births attended post-training.

Kristine Lauria, CPM, a globally respected expert in physiological breech and twin birth, will be leading our training team for this initiative. Currently serving as BWB's Global Midwifery Director, she has first-hand experience working within the Rohingya refugee camp during a mission with Médecins Sans Frontières. With over 500 vaginal breech and 400 twin births attended, Kristine brings unparalleled clinical expertise developed through decades of frontline midwifery in low-resource and humanitarian settings. This ensures that our training is not only clinically rigorous but deeply attuned to the cultural and logistical realities of displaced and underserved communities.
