Denny Hartung, MD

Dennis (Denny) Hartung learned the art of gentle birthing while he served as an Army OB-GYN with military Nurse-Midwives for 11 years in Alaska. Since his Army retirement in 2005, he has practiced community Obstetrics and Gynecology in rural Wisconsin and in the eastern suburbs of the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. He has an interest in VBAC/TOLAC and vaginal breech birth and in promoting the midwifery model of care in obstetrics.

He currently works at Western Wisconsin Health in Baldwin, WI, a small critical access hospital with 6% C-section rate for low-risk first-time mothers. His hospital supports vaginal breech and twin birth, VBAC, and waterbirth and is a breech referral center for local families. He has attended around 500 vaginal breech births over his 35-year career, mostly physiologic since he first learned that skill in 2005. He looks forward to retirement in 2027, which will allow him to focus on passing on the art of vaginal breech birth to the next generation of midwives and physicians.
